Tattoo Aftercare in Bali: Healing Your Ink in Heat & Humidity
Updated August 2026 · Under Skin Tattoo Studio, Canggu
Getting a tattoo in Bali is easy. Healing one in tropical heat and humidity takes a little more attention. Sweat, sun and beach water are the three biggest risks to a fresh tattoo — here is exactly how to protect yours.
Week 1: Clean and Dry
- Leave the artist's bandage on for the time they recommend (usually a few hours).
- Wash gently twice a day with lukewarm water and fragrance-free antibacterial soap.
- Pat dry with a clean towel — never rub.
- Apply a thin layer of the aftercare balm recommended by your artist.
The Sweat Problem
Bali is hot, and sweat sitting on a healing tattoo is a breeding ground for bacteria. Shower quickly after workouts or long walks, and keep the tattoo out of tight, sweaty clothing. If you are active, time your tattoo for a quieter part of your trip.
The Sun Problem
A healing tattoo must stay out of direct sun — period. Cover it with clothing or stay in the shade for the first 2–3 weeks. After it heals, high-SPF sunscreen every day keeps the ink crisp. Sun is the number one cause of tattoo fading.
The Beach Problem
No ocean, pool or hot tub for at least 2–3 weeks. Salt water, chlorine and sand are all irritants. Plan your swim days before your appointment, not after — the manta rays and surf will still be there.
What to Avoid
- Scratching or picking — let the tattoo peel naturally.
- Heavy exercise — avoid intense sweating for about a week.
- Alcohol-heavy nights — dehydration slows healing.
- Mosquito repellent on the tattoo — spray around it, not on it.
